America’s Love Affair with Benetton
Long before Zara and H&M, Benetton forged the principles of fast fashion and became a global phenomenon. By the early 1990s, the company operated more than 6,000 stores in over 83 countries and sold approximately 60 million garments annually.
This project investigates how the Italian knitwear giant, headquartered in Ponzano Veneto, linked design, production, and retail through rapid turnaround, competitive pricing, and constant novelty. Operationally, Benetton combined innovative garment-dyeing techniques, carefully managed subcontractors, and an international franchise network to adapt quickly to consumer demand.
Drawing on archival research in New York, Milan, and Los Angeles, the project will examine how these practices, together with Benetton’s colorful knitwear and provocative advertising, shaped the brand’s appeal in the United States, resulting in both academic scholarship and a public-facing podcast about its influence on the modern global fashion industry.
